Racing in full swing at Mur'bah for club's summer series
Dec 26, 2016
THE second leg of the Tweed River Jockey Club's summer racing series is set to get under way at Murwillumbah racecourse on Tuesday.
The Trainer and Racing Services Centre has received 113 nominations at the time of this edition going to print. In one race alone, the 2020m Class 1 and maiden plate, the names of 17 thoroughbreds have been put forward, a good indication of the keen interest shown by connections across the breadth of the program.
Last Friday's Murwillumbah meeting proved just as popular, with 1500 patrons making their way through the turnstiles for the increasingly well attended Christmas twilight affair.
Local trainer Matt Dunn notched up a winning double, giving him the lead in the special trainers' competition straddling the three meetings of the summer series.
In last Friday's feature cup race, the 1200m "Christmas Sprint” open handicap, it was top weight and $3 favourite Profiler who saluted. Carrying a 60kg handicapper's impost, he saw off a late challenge from Fiercely Defiant to take victory in a photo finish by a short half head.
Trained at Ballina by Stephen Lee, the six-year-old gelding has now won seven times in 23 starts and earned $157,925 in prize money.
Tuesday's meeting will showcase two feature events in the seven-race TAB program, a Benchmark 60 handicap over 1010m and a Class 3 handicap over 1530m. The track is currently rated a Good 3 with forecasters predicting patchy weather ahead and minimal rainfall to race day. Gates open at 12.30pm.
